The story begins...
... with H.M.S. Pinafore newly arrived in Portsmouth Harbour. All seems well as the crew gladly welcome Little Buttercup on board to sell her wares. Captain Corcoran, too, should be a happy man - he is admired and respected by his crew, and his daughter Josephine is being courted by Sir Joseph Porter, K.C.B., the First Lord of the Admiralty. Yet we soon realise that stormy weather lies ahead, for the fair Josephine has another suitor - the lowly Ralph Rackstraw - and while she secretly returns his love, she scorns to marry beneath her; Ralph is driven to desperation by her hardness of heart.
The arrival of Sir Joseph, accompanied by his sisters, cousins and aunts, accelerates events. The loathsome Dick Deadeye, always ready to stir up trouble, ensures that disaster looms near. Things are seldom what they seem, however, and it is possible that a solution to all the problems may yet be revealed...
